All new students who plan to borrow through the Federal Direct Stafford Loan program must sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN) in addition to completing Stafford Loan Entrance and Exit Counseling. Before you begin, make sure that you have handy access to your FSA ID and the names and addresses of two personal references. All of these activities take place online at the studentloans.gov website.
Master Promissory Note (MPN)
Required before you receive the first disbursement of your Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan.
The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s); for instance, it will include information on how interest is calculated and what deferment and cancellation provisions are available to you.
Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling
The purpose of the online counseling session is to help you understand your rights and obligations as a student loan borrower. This student loan counseling session will prepare you for proper management of your student loan. True/false questions are given throughout the counseling session, and you must provide correct answers before being allowed to proceed. Upon completion of the student loan counseling session, you will complete an online form. This form is then sent to Oglethorpe, notifying us that you have met the loan counseling requirement. You will need about 25 minutes to complete the session.
Stafford Loan Exit Counseling
All Stafford Loan borrowers are required to complete exit counseling upon graduation or withdrawal from the University. Information regarding in-person counseling sessions is sent to all students. We also offer students the option of exit counseling online.
